After years of lobbying the Council and arguing the case that the van dweller encampment on the Downs has a ‘High Impact’ on local residents, Councillors John Goulandris and Henry Michallat are pleased to see the Council is at long last taking action by starting eviction proceedings on the one-way section of Parry’s Lane which cuts through Durdham Down from the A4018 to Saville Road.
Cllr John Goulandris comments: ‘This is a positive step in the right direction after years and years of campaigning. We will be keeping a close eye on the situation over the coming weeks’.
Cllr Henry Michallat adds: ‘It is great to see at long last the Council deems this encampment as ‘High Impact’ after years of lobbying the previous Mayor and Council. This is a very positive step’. The long term solution to van dwelling, as adopted by other local authorities, is a city wide ‘no overnight camping on the highway’ by law, robustly enforced with van dwellers either using designated Council van sites or leaving Bristol.
