The Mayor’s refusal to listen to local concerns about the boundaries of Bristol’s Clean Air Zone (CAZ) could result in a major deterioration in air quality in Sea Mills and Stoke Bishop. The CAZ is set to start later this year.
Henry Michallat advises “The CAZ includes a small section of the Portway by Cumberland Basin. This has nothing to do with discouraging motorists from entering the city centre, but is just a way of extorting money. To avoid the CAZ charge motorists are likely to turn off the Portway and use our local roads, increasing local air pollution”
John Goulandris put this very point to the Mayor in Council and says “The Mayor admitted that air quality in Sea Mills and Stoke Bishop might get worse, but we should not worry, as it would probably remain within legal limits. What a disgraceful reply!”
On a more positive note, we have managed to secure £15,000 of Council funding for new trees and we know local residents’ associations are also planting trees to mark the Queen’s platinum jubilee celebrations.
